Awakening of the Roots

January 12 to 26, 2012

Baobab

This trip to Senegal brings American and Senegalese people together on African soil.  You will experience the sights, sounds, and tastes of everyday life in the city and country while absorbing the Senegalese culture.  You will meet Senegalese people and learn more about their lives and the basic institution of their families.

We will arrive in Dakar, Senegal, and will make trips to various places including the Holy village of Touba and Retba Lake, better known as the pink lake (lac rose).

DrummersEach day, drum and dance classes will be open to all whether you are accomplished in these arts or have never placed your hands on a drum or have never moved to the African beat.  Drum and dance are the heart of the African culture.

What more will you experience?

GoreeYou will visit historical Goree Island - the place where slavery started.  This brief but important visit will provide you with an African perspective of the roots of slavery and how it has formed for the African-American community a unique identity and ethnic history.

We will visit villages where we will meet families and children experiencing their culture and life.  These visits have positively affected the lives of everyone who has taken this trip.

A3D PhotoIncluded in the trip will be optional visits to the schools and medical institutions where the fundraising of A3D has made a difference.

You will also enjoy leisure days during which you will be free to experience local activities.

The evenings and weekend will be open for you to explore where and what your interests desire.  Some suggestions are: trips to nightclubs, the African market (where drums, clothing, and other items are both made and sold), museums, visit spirituals, healers, and African Shaman (who can do readings and perform rituals).  These will be planned for group or individual participants.
